GEL-Quantum 180
The ASICS Gel-Quantum series was launched in 2015, introducing a new form of Gel cushioning that was visible all the way around the midsole. It proved to be very popular, and in the years that followed, the collection expanded with the release of the Gel-Quantum 180.
Built to offer the comfort of an everyday sneaker but with the performance technology normally found in athletic footwear, the ASICS Gel-Quantum 180 delivers the best of both lifestyle and sporting categories. Various models make up the series, all featuring the core properties of stability, impact protection, versatile looks and great cushioning. Earlier versions incorporated a lightweight Solyte foam midsole, a durable high-abrasion rubber outsole and a sturdy Trusstic System through the midfoot, but the most standout component was the visible Gel cushioning encompassing 180 degrees of the heel for reliable shock absorption and maximum comfort.
As the series evolved, so did its technology, and in 2022, the Gel-Quantum 180 VII introduced several new features. It was designed with the ASICS Institute of Sport Science, who gave it a Flytefoam midsole with upgraded Scutoid Gel in the heel. The shape and structure of this Gel were precisely engineered to provide greater shock absorption, a more lightweight feel and a smoother transition through the foot. On its 2025 successor, the VIII, the brand innovated once again, using cutting-edge Division Space technology to make the midsole even more shock-absorbing and adding Flytefoam Propel cushioning for lightweight support and exceptional comfort.
From the very beginning, the focus of the Gel-Quantum 180’s upper has been breathability, flexibility and a snug, comfortable fit, which is usually achieved with a soft, lightweight mesh and a sturdy heel counter. Minimal layering and a stripped-back style created by subtle no-sew overlays give the series a sporty, athleisure look, as exemplified by the ASICS Gel-Quantum 180 VII, whose pliable jacquard mesh features sleek, flowing lines and offers a contoured, adaptive fit. 2025’s Gel-Quantum VIII takes this style even further, with dynamic curved patterns inspired by heritage runners like the Gel-Kinsei 4 and Gel-Sendai 2. Alongside this, welded overlays, reflective accents and recycled materials make it an eye-catching yet sustainable shoe.
As the Gel-Quantum range grew in popularity, ASICS designed variants like the surfer-friendly RE edition, which incorporates a Mono Sock construction and easy on-off features for those rushing to catch a wave. The brand also worked on collaborative versions with Parisian label M+RC Noir and streetball-inspired clothing brand ballaholic in 2021 as well as a duo of Gel-Quantum 180 designs with active streetwear brand P.E. Nation in 2023.
Made for those pursuing an active lifestyle, the ASICS Gel-Quantum 180 has a compelling sporty aesthetic and athletic functionality to match. Its stunning combination of performance and style is epitomised by the bold cushioning visible around the entire heel, making it completely unforgettable.
