The New Balance 1000 is an archival mesh runner with a difference. First released in 1999, it originally presented a twist on the classic running shoe of the time due to its conspicuous overlays, eventually reaching a modest level of popularity. Over two decades later, it was reintroduced as a stylish retro lifestyle sneaker.
The sole unit of the New Balance 1000 offers excellent support through its large stack of soft polyurethane foam and segmented ABZORB pods. These offer great impact protection and make it incredibly comfortable, while the sturdy midfoot Stability Web provides enough rigidity for a stable step. Durable rubber covers the outsole, which extends broadly across the forefoot and heel to deliver even greater stability. Its curvaceous tread patterns add solid traction, and flex grooves have been placed in key areas so that the foot can move freely.
The 1000 has a distinctive upper which evokes classic late 90s vibes while also being somewhat futuristic in style. Wavy leather and suede overlays flow seamlessly across its mesh base layer, giving incredible depth, and further panels protect the toe and heel. Plush padding fills the interior, with an extra pillowy touch provided by the double cushion in the heel. The shoe also has a distinctive lacing system that sits atop the upper, its nylon eyelets and thick tongue loops combining for a secure fit.
Aesthetically, the New Balance 1000 features the familiar look of a Y2K-era mesh runner, but with its own distinctive retro-futurist feel. Its swooping overlays are almost an exact replica of the original version, with minimal adjustments to the pattern and collar height that improve the design while maintaining its heritage look. Asymmetric heel panelling is paired with sophisticated branding effects and subtle hints of reflective material that deliver an eye-catching shimmer to the front and rear of the shoe. The sidewalls are adorned with rubberised N logos, and the chunky midsole has been sculpted to match the 1999 model for a classic finish.
Teddy Santis, the talented Creative Director of New Balance’s Made in USA line, came up with the idea to bring back the 1000 in the early 2020s, but it wasn’t until April 2024 that the archival model finally made its triumphant return. It did so with the help of renowned brand collaborator Joe Freshgoods, who crafted two sleek launch colourways. These were soon followed by the first general release sneaker, the striking ‘Silver Metallic’, which was modelled by British rapper and actor Dave, helping to boost its popularity. Since then, notable collaborations have been designed with Santis’ own label, Aimé Leon Dore, lifestyle brand Kith, creative company Concepts, apparel designers Bricks & Wood, Japanese lifestyle retailer BEAMS and South Korean fashion label thisisneverthat.
Sporty yet stylish, chunky yet lightweight, bold yet elegant, the New Balance 1000 is a sneaker that defies norms, forging its own distinctive path while containing the technological elements necessary for comfortable all-day wear.
