Air Pegasus Wave

The dependable Nike Pegasus running shoe has been around since the early 1980s, and over the years there have been certain versions that have really stood out. One of these is the 2005 model, which was reissued in 2024 as a nostalgic retro sneaker. That same year, Nike drew inspiration from the thriving rave scene of the early 2000s to design a new take on this popular shoe, calling it the Air Pegasus Wave.

In many ways, the Nike Air Pegasus Wave resembles the 2005 silhouette, its midsole carrying forward the same blend of soft foam and full-length Air cushioning to provide a comfortable step. Its outsole is also similar, featuring a classic Waffle tread pattern made from durable BRS 1000 rubber for long-lasting and reliable grip.

The upper is where things change for the Air Pegasus Wave as, although it presents some similar elements and shapes, it has been built using an intriguing mixture of materials arranged with complexity and depth for a powerful look. A lightweight, tight-knit mesh forms the base layer of the design, with moulded shapes bulging out of the forefoot and heel. Glossy leather overlays appear over the top, and a matte finish has been used to add contrast to the toe cap. Around the collar, a much wider mesh has been applied, while the tongue opts for the same narrow-holed mesh found on the rest of the shoe. Ultimately, this makes the Pegasus Wave incredibly breathable throughout, especially with the addition of several larger perforations on the heel and tongue.

One of the most distinctive elements of the 2005 Pegasus was the design of its flanks, which has been used as inspiration for the TPU sidewall panels on the Nike Air Pegasus Wave. Here, they form a sturdy structure that extends over the sides of the midsole, arrow-like slits cut into it all the way along, thus presenting a dynamic visual aesthetic. Over the top of each lies a sleek swoosh to go with those bulging out of the forefoot and embossed into the toe. A translucent capsule decorates the heel, and Pegasus Wave text adorns the tongue, while the shoe’s full-length Air cushioning is advertised on the lateral midsole and the bottom of the heel. Here, the Nike Running website has also been referenced as a nod to the sporting heritage of the Pegasus series.

Unique to the Air Pegasus Wave is the storage pocket placed secretively on the back of the tongue. This stealthy feature pays homage to early 2000s raves, where the 2005 Pegasus was a popular choice. When the Wave was released in the autumn of 2024, it was aspects like this that set it apart from the other footwear of the time.

Bold, stylish and comfortable, the Nike Air Pegasus Wave is a striking take on a decades-old running shoe, with heaps of contemporary charm and a utilitarian edge that makes it ideal for day-to-day wear.
