The 1970s was an important decade for New Balance as the brand built up a strong collection of performance running shoes. They also introduced the famous N logo, adding it to road-running models like the 320 and SuperComp as well as more trail-friendly options such as the 355 and CrossCountry. In 2020, the brand honoured this pivotal era with a new silhouette inspired by these classic 70s sports shoes: the New Balance 327.

The 327’s upper is made of soft nylon mesh with elegantly curved suede overlays on the heel and forefoot. Inspired by the original SuperComp model, this combination is both lightweight and breathable, maximising comfort and delivering durability in key areas. An exaggerated logo adorns the lateral flank, and delicate stitching effects offer a refined touch, while the split eyestay and tongue lace loop provide a secure fit.

The New Balance 327 has a distinctive sole unit consisting of a large wedge of EVA foam that flares out boldly along the sides, celebrating 70s fashion while also paying homage to the brand’s archival footwear designs. The result is a broad, stable base that offers great shock absorption and cushioned comfort. Below this, its outsole is lined with rows of round studs in a captivating throwback to 70s trail running shoes like the 355 and the CrossCountry. The durable rubber surface not only provides strong traction underfoot, it also wraps up over the heel and toe for comprehensive support and a standout look.

With its striking sole unit, heritage influences and use of high-quality contemporary materials, the New Balance 327 is a fashionable blend of 70s sporting aesthetics and modern style. Its eye-catching N logo brings power to the lateral flank, leaving the medial side clean for a contrastive minimal effect, while its unique midsole and wraparound outsole generate a distinctive look. The NB-branded tongue patch is a more understated detail, and the split eyestay adds a dynamic touch over the top of the foot.

The 327 was revealed in January 2020 when luxury leisurewear brand Casablanca showcased its elegant collaboration on the Paris Fashion Week runway. This made a strong statement, especially after one of the colourways was worn by well-known media personality Kendall Jenner, boosting its general release. New Balance has since released new colourways each year, many decorated in stylish vintage tones. 

The New Balance 327 has also been a popular collaborative canvas, drawing partnerships with everyone from streetwear labels like Concepts and Aries to sneaker boutiques such as Limited Edt and Shoe Palace, as well as a spectrum of sportspeople including tennis star Coco Gauff, basketball player Kawhi Leonard and footballer Raheem Sterling. High-fashion companies have also designed elevated editions of the 327, with two luxurious sneakers from Los Angeles lifestyle brand STAUD and the vibrant ‘Farmer’s Market’ collection by purveyor of premium menswear Todd Snyder.

Appealingly retro yet distinctly modern, the New Balance 327 is a stylish casual sneaker whose substantial midsole and lightweight, breathable upper make it incredibly comfortable for all-day wear.
