The ASICS archives are filled with mesh-based running shoes aimed at all different types of athlete. One of these is 2003’s Gel-1090 – a well-cushioned trainer able to support runners over many miles. In 2019, the brand revisited this classic model, updating its design for the modern city streets.

The original ASICS Gel-1090 was inspired by the dynamic designs of top-level motorbikes, and the 2019 revamp is no different. Its upper features a tightly woven yet breathable mesh with angular overlays that evoke a feeling of speed, while the ASICS stripes logos have been integrated into the lacing system for a secure fit. In 2023, the brand reworked the upper a second time, introducing a stripped back version on the Gel-1090 v2 with classy suede panelling, standout logos, an internal heel counter for added stability and convenient pull tabs on the tongue and heel.

Underfoot, the sole unit of the Gel-1090 incorporates a responsive EVA foam with shock-absorbing layers of Gel cushioning in the heel. While this offers a great blend of comfort and support, its powerful outsole displays a motorcycle-inspired tread pattern that delivers outstanding traction. Lastly, a strong shank brings torsional rigidity to the midfoot, ensuring the wearer receives all-day support.

Aesthetically, the ASICS Gel-1090 is bold and distinctive, with classic design details including tiger-claw scratch marks on the overlays and shield-like badges on the tongue and heel. Although the 2019 sneaker exhibits a Y2K-era look that honours the 2003 original, the v2 has a more modern construction, with sophisticated branding on the lateral heel and pull tabs. Both have an undulating midsole with curved grooves swooping along the sides as a reference to the checkered flags waved at the end of a motorsports race, as well as a stripe of exposed Gel for an eye-catching touch around the heel.

The 2019 reissue of the Gel-1090 was boosted by a stunning advertising campaign involving K-pop group Kard, who produced a visually impressive music video that leaned into the shoe’s motorbiking roots with the tagline ‘Built For The Thrill’. In it, the band showcased the collection of vibrant colourways ASICS had designed, paving the way for a successful release. Collaborations with South Korean ready-to-wear label Andersson Bell, fashion boutique Above the Clouds and Japanese streetwear brand BAPE followed, each giving their own unique take on the retro design.

This led to the release of the Gel-1090 v2 in 2023, which was launched through a limited edition collaboration with Danish photographer and creative director Freja Wewer. Her elegant silver version is based on a pair of ASICS running shoes borrowed from her mother as a child, and is designed to inspire active movement for a more fulfilling life.

The ASICS Gel-1090 connects the past and present, artfully combining sporting heritage with contemporary features to create a versatile lifestyle sneaker for modern city living.
