Cloudflow
On is known for its high-quality running shoes, and one of its most versatile is the Cloudflow. First designed in the late 2010s, it was pitched as an all-round training shoe suitable for different types of exercise, from tempo runs to full marathons and even racing.
The On Cloudflow combines the tried-and-tested combination of firm, supportive foam and Cloudtec cushioning in a low-profile build for a great mix of comfort, responsiveness and ground-feel. While early versions used Zero-Gravity EVA foam, the latest models, including the Cloudflow 4, incorporate lightweight Helion superfoam in two different densities. A softer layer sits directly beneath the foot, with a sturdier layer adding durability to the section that is closer to the ground, thus bringing greater overall stability to the shoe. Nestled in between these two slabs is a Nylon-blend Speedboard whose spoon-like shape works with the rockered geometry of the sole unit to drive the runner forwards, offering great performance at high speeds. CloudTec pods then soften each landing, protecting the wearer from impacts, and the rubber outsole features a variety of grip patterns under different parts of the foot for excellent traction. The outsole of the Cloudflow has always contained generous flex grooves that facilitate free-flowing movement, with those on newer models being shallower so as not to pick up stones from off-road tracks.
The On Cloudflow’s upper is also crafted to perform. It is made from high-quality, lightweight engineered mesh that is super breathable, and the most recent versions incorporate 100% recycled materials across many parts. This is especially true on the Cloudflow 4, whose one-piece design is formed of two thin yet supportive layers of mesh that are tightly woven for extra durability without being too rigid. The upper is pleasantly flexible as a result and adapts to fit a range of foot types. At the back, the shoe is shaped to cup the heel, working with the standard lacing and the thin, lightweight semi-gusseted tongue to hold the foot firmly in place. Generous padding around the collar keeps things comfortable, and there is plenty of room in the forefoot for the toes to splay out during runs.
Since the very beginning, the Cloudflow has exhibited a minimalist style, with delicate branding on the flanks, heel and tongue. This has continued throughout the series, with some models distinguished by their use of smooth no-sew overlays. On more recent models, even these have been stripped back, giving the Cloudflow 4 a sleek, classy look. In 2024, forward-thinking design company Bureau Borsche collaborated with On to create two colourways: one in graceful shades of white, the other in bold black hues. This brought the Cloudflow to a more fashion-oriented audience, helping to expand its appeal.
With its lightweight, responsive design, the On Cloudflow is a versatile running shoe that can carry athletes through a whole range of workouts. On top of this, its stylish upper and flexible yet supportive sole unit make it a great option for everyday use.
