On launched its Cloudstratus running shoe series in 2020 with the aim of providing a high-quality shoe for everyday use. The brand quickly moved through various iterations, innovating and adjusting to the point where the On Cloudstratus is now considered a flagship performance silhouette.

The lynchpin of the Cloudstratus series is its double layer of CloudTec cushioning set within a generous stack of Helion superfoam. Although the exact arrangement of the CloudTec pods changed from the 2020 edition to the 2023’s Cloudstratus 3, they have always provided outstanding shock absorption. They also add softness and bounce to offset the supportively firm foam padding, ensuring incredible comfort throughout mid- and long-distance runs. The midsole has a rockered shape that propels the runner forwards, while the presence of a rigid Speedboard improves responsiveness and stability; an effect enhanced by the strong heel counter. Meanwhile, the tough rubber of the outsole provides durable traction in a range of conditions, with flexibility delivered by deep grooves which on more recent editions have been carefully shaped to prevent stones getting stuck.

The upper of the On Cloudstratus is made from a breathable mesh that in newer iterations features recycled materials. While the first generation model has panelling on the forefoot and flanks, those released since have a more seamless aesthetic produced by classy no-sew overlays. Luxurious padding on the heel and tongue ensure superior comfort around the ankle and eliminate lace pressure, especially on the Cloudstratus 3, which features an extra flexible heel lining and reworked collar design. The standard lacing is secured by a substantial eyestay structure, and the lower part incorporates a unique setup that extends asymmetrically down the forefoot. Combined with the gusseting on the tongue, this gives the wearer a snug, comfortable fit. It does so without being too restrictive as there is ample space within the toe box for the foot to splay out during movement.

As well as being built to support the daily running routines of all athletes, the On Cloudstratus has a carefully crafted aesthetic. Its sporty upper displays minimal branding to keep it looking sleek, and reflective elements highlight the shoe in low-light. The sole unit is more striking in appearance, with the interlocking CloudTec pods presenting a bold visual effect that is unique to the brand. Ultimately, this makes the Cloudstratus a great all-round running shoe for stylish, effortless day-to-day training.
