The ASICS headquarters is based in Kobe, Japan – a port city set against the backdrop of the impressive Rokkō mountain range. In 2024, the brand chose to honour this connection to the city and its natural surroundings with the release of a trail-inspired silhouette called the ASICS Gel-Nunobiki.

In designing the Gel-Nunobiki’s upper, ASICS looked to a duo of trail-running shoes from the early 2010s: the Gel-Kahana 3 and the Gel-Target. Using these as a guide, the brand layered up durable synthetic leather panels over a breathable mesh base, with a rigid heel counter reinforcing the back of the foot. Meanwhile, its well-padded tongue includes textile lace loops to secure the foot in place.

Underfoot, the ASICS Gel-Nunobiki is supported by a slab of EVA foam etched with geometric shapes akin to those seen on Kobe’s streets. Gel-cushioning offers outstanding impact protection and bounce in the heel, while the shoe’s outsole features hard-wearing multidirectional lugs for excellent traction on a variety of outdoor surfaces.

Different textures and finishes have been incorporated into the outer of the Gel-Nunobiki, each referencing the natural beauty of the Nunobiki trail the shoe was named after. This walking route connects the sacred Nunobiki waterfalls and reservoir, which also acted as inspirations for the shoe’s captivating aesthetic. As well as celebrating the natural world, this pays homage to the city landscape where the path begins, artfully interweaving a story of ASICS’ trail-running heritage and its close connection to the lush natural surroundings.

When the Gel-Nunobiki first came out in 2024, it was launched with the help of a three-colourway collaboration by fellow Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons. Each design features a single striking tone, including nature-inspired colours like blue and green alongside a vibrant shade of orange for the final shoe. Following this, the brand created a series of stylish general release models with signature neutrals such as metallic silver and off-white accompanying brighter accents.

The ASICS Gel-Nunobiki acts as a compelling homage to the brand’s home and history, as well as the lush vegetation and stunning views of the nearby Nunobiki trail. Along with these captivating inspirations, the shoe presents a collection of comfort-giving features and a stylish aesthetic that make it ideal for transitioning between urban and natural environments.
