Phantom

The foundations of the Nike Phantom go back to the early 2010s and the Hypervenom and Magista franchises. They introduced groundbreaking materials and innovative features, paving the way for the Phantom to become one of the most revolutionary football boots in the history of the sport.

When it debuted in 2018, there were two Nike Phantoms: the Vision control-boot and the striker-focused Venom. The Vision’s Flyknit upper features a Ghost Lacing system with an uninterrupted strike zone covering the laces, while its sock-like internal Quadfit mesh ensures comfortable lockdown by evenly distributing pressure across the foot. Its soleplate was designed using Finite Element Analysis, resulting in outstanding multidirectional traction. On the Venom, a textured toe box combines with PWR Strike Ridges and partially covered laces to create grippy zones for powerful striking, and its HyperReactive soleplate facilitates instinctive movement and attacking finesse.

In 2020, Nike combined these into the Phantom GT. Its name stands for ‘Generative Texture’, which describes the data-mapped 3D nodules on its upper. Together with its nimble soleplate, they provide accurate touch whether dribbling, passing or striking. In 2022, Nike introduced its revolutionary Gripknit upper on the Phantom GX. Made from specialised lightweight yarns with a TPU coating that creates a sticky texture without restricting flexibility, this comfortable, form-fitting, durable upper delivers consistent touch and precise control in both wet and dry conditions. Ahead of the 2023 women’s World Cup, the Phantom Luna was developed specifically for female footballers, its cutting-edge Cyclone 360 soleplate supporting confident foot placement and agile pivoting.

2025’s game-changing Nike Phantom 6 built on these innovations, incorporating a micro-textured Tuned Gripknit upper with reinforced strike zones for accurate shooting and intuitive ball control. Its last is more anatomical, offering a natural feel, especially in the toe, while the ankle is shaped for comfort and the form-fitting material moulds to a range of feet. The high-top version features a Dynamic Fit collar made of stretchy yet secure Flyknit and brings back Ghost Lacing for clean, powerful shooting. Both versions have a comfortably cushioned sockliner alongside an updated Cyclone 360 soleplate with an extra row of integrated conical studs and special agility flex zones that deliver balanced weight distribution so players can attack with confidence, pace and flair. Aesthetically, it is inspired by the iconic Hypervenom, with a bold, rebellious look that reflects the Phantom player’s ruthless mindset and puts fear into opposition defenders.

Over the years, the Phantom has been worn by iconic players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Harry Kane, which has boosted the popularity of each release. For the Phantom 6, Nike enlisted prolific striker Erling Haaland, who praised the silhouette for giving him the “precision to score more goals”, and legendary Spanish forward Alexia Putellas, who stated that its grippy upper allows her to achieve inch-perfect ball placement.
