Although the Nike Initiator first came out in the early 2010s, it didn’t reach high levels of popularity until its rerelease in the early 2020s. At that point, its classic Y2K aesthetic fit into the prevailing trend for mesh-covered, 2000s-era running shoes, while it also offered an alternative to the premium Zoom Vomero 5 model.

Originally designed to be an everyday sports shoe, the Initiator features a highly breathable upper made from mesh overlaid with durable leather panelling. The materials are lightweight and flexible, and the plush inner lining and generously cushioned tongue ensure a soft, snug fit around the foot.

The sole unit of the Nike Initiator comprises a well-cushioned foam midsole with a decent stack height and a hard-wearing rubber outsole. Aesthetically, the Initiator has the classy look of a Y2K running shoe. Its overlays meander stylishly from heel to toe, while curved panels and a swoosh logo with a bold outline decorate each side. Nike Initiator branding shows up on the tongue patch, and another set of Nike text runs up the heel, where it is flanked by lines of perforations. Together, this creates a dynamic appearance that has seen the Initiator grow significantly in popularity since 2024.
