Nike launched the Tiempo football boot in 1984, setting the stage for one of its most beloved sporting franchises. Fundamentally offering dependable control and cushy comfort, its steady evolution has ensured unmatched long-term success.

Early designs like the Nike Tiempo D were all similar, featuring soft kangaroo leather uppers and foldover tongues, and were fairly unknown before the Tiempo Premier was worn by players like Romario and Maldini at the 1994 World Cup. Minimal updates followed until the sleek Air Tiempo Legend in 2005, which revamped the series with features like a breathable mesh tongue and supportive Zoom Air soleplate. Skilful number 10 Ronaldinho represented the football boot, making it hugely popular. 2006’s Tiempo Legend 2 increased stability and control through altered stitching and a reworked heel counter, and its successor introduced a split carbon-fibre soleplate without Zoom Air alongside a lightweight, synthetic KangaLite upper with Flywire lacing to improve comfort, flexibility and security. Meanwhile, in 2008, Nike released the robust, lightweight Tiempo Super Ligera for the hard pitches common in Asia.

The Nike Tiempo Legend continued with its 4th edition in 2011, dropping 20g of weight, using updated stitching to prevent overstretching, and removing the foldover tongue for a more streamlined feel. To create consistency of touch in wet weather, All Conditions Control (ACC) treatment was later added, and the Tiempo Legend 5 further enhanced this with the introduction of Nike Hypershield technology in 2014. Legendary Italian playmaker Francesco Totti was its ambassador, his special edition bringing back the foldover tongue. His countryman Andrea Pirlo became known for wearing its successor, the Tiempo Legend 6, with its integrated tongue and internal microfibre frame. Goalscoring Spanish defender Sergio Ramos then showcased the versatility of 2017’s Tiempo Legend 7, which was the first to incorporate Flyknit mesh alongside a Hyperstability plate for lightweight, multidirectional traction.

The Tiempo Legend 8 rounded out the 2010s with diamond-shaped contours enhancing control and an innovative Flyknit Fit Tunnel containing the midfoot. Powerful Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk represented the football boot as he helped Liverpool win the 2019-20 Premier League. In 2021, Nike released the more traditional Tiempo Legend 9, whose lightweight, textured upper incorporates strategically located foam pads that improve boot-to-ball connection. 2023’s Tiempo Legend 10 then introduced FlyTouch Plus – a proprietary synthetic leather with a soft, supple touch, reduced weight and water-retention, and better durability.

A new era began for the Nike Tiempo in January 2026 as two separate models came out: the Maestro and the Ligera. Both feature an advanced TechLeather upper which is softer and offers a more consistent touch than natural leather. The Tiempo Maestro allows players to command the game thanks to the outstanding control provided by the moulded contours on its upper alongside the flexibility and highly manoeuvrable grip of its Maestro360 soleplate and the extra lockdown coming from its split plate design. Meanwhile, the Ligera delivers a more traditional feel with the slightly dampened touch of its classic forefoot stitching and the consistent traction of its full-length soleplate.
