Invincible running shoes

Throughout the mid-to-late 2010s, Nike developed new racing-focused super shoes with large, highly responsive midsoles. Before long, this technology was transferred to everyday running footwear, leading to the introduction of an advanced daily trainer called the Nike Invincible.

Released in 2021, the original Invincible features a Flyknit upper with densely woven sections for structure and open, perforated areas for breathability. The tongue is generously padded, as is the collar, which includes plush internal and external cushioning to protect the ankle. Reinforced lacing combines with a gusseted tongue to hold the midfoot, and the heel is secured by a sturdy counter and plastic clip, ensuring excellent lockdown. This is further improved by the firm Flyknit weave, which is snug without being too restrictive and incorporates a roomy forefoot. Lastly, reflective elements add a practical touch for running after dark. Underfoot, the Nike Invincible has a full-ZoomX midsole that can be directly accessed by the foot thanks to the lack of a strobel. This gives an incredibly plush feel to complement the supportive shock absorption and lightweight responsiveness of the stacked midsole. Its gentle rocker shape smooths out transitions as the overhanging, flared heel and wide forefoot stabilise the soft foam. Meanwhile, the full-coverage rubber outsole presents a broad landing platform, its rows of small Waffle-inspired lugs producing durable grip on roads and pavements.

The Nike Invincible was the brand’s first daily trainer with a full-ZoomX midsole, and it became known for having a uniquely well-cushioned yet fun and responsive feel which supported runners through daily training and recovery runs at various paces. Its 2022 successor, the Invincible 2, introduced minimal changes, slightly enlarging the midsole to generate even better impact protection and stability. Its Flyknit upper has a more stable and durable structure, with reinforced areas on the sides of the forefoot and reduced heel padding for a more lightweight fit. Thinner, more spaced-out laces combine with the firm tongue mesh to reduce pressure on the instep, while the TPU clip has higher sidewalls that more effectively cradle the heel and increase stability.

In 2023, Nike launched the updated Invincible 3, reworking its Flyknit upper to deliver greater support and stability alongside enhanced breathability. Its sleeker shape offers decent padding while removing bulk from the heel, which features a larger reflective stripe, a convenient pull tab and a longer, slimmer TPU clip. The taller ZoomX midsole maximises impact protection for long miles of injury-free running, while its more streamlined geometry increases efficiency as its wider base and strobel layer improve stability and control. Supporting this is a thick, durable rubber outsole with large Waffle lugs that provide dependable traction. Altogether, the Invincible 3 is a more versatile shoe as its solid stability suits a wider range of running styles while still producing outstanding energy return.
