Salomon has long been associated with high-functioning outdoor footwear, but it only began to penetrate the world of fashion during the mid-late 2010s. In 2018, the XT-6 technical trail running shoe transitioned from the brand’s performance range to its Sportstyle category, signifying the beginning of a prosperous new era for both Salomon and its flagship silhouette.

The Salomon XT-6’s upper is made of a flexible, quick-drying, breathable mesh, with laminated TPU panels designed to resist abrasion and improve durability, particularly around the toe and heel. Further protection is provided by a sturdy toe cap, while the internal EndoFit sleeve and supportive SensiFit frame ensure a snug, secure fit free from heel slippage. The textile lining adds softness and breathability, and the hardy quickLACE system facilitates seamless on and off before being stowed neatly in the discreet tongue pocket.

The XT-6 is supported by a tough sole unit with a responsive dual-density EnergyCell midsole that is firm enough to absorb off-road impacts yet soft enough to maintain comfort. Salomon’s Agile Chassis System forms a rigid frame around the midsole, containing, stabilising and dampening the foam while also enhancing its effects, especially when going downhill. The hard-wearing Mud Contragrip outsole is made from a special adhesive rubber and features deep-set, angular lugs that produce maximum traction over challenging terrain, including loose rocks, waterlogged fields and steep, slippery gradients. Lastly, the moulded Ortholite sockliner mimics the foot’s natural contours for a final comfort-giving touch.

Designed for Salomon’s elite athletes, the XT-6 has a striking style defined by its dynamic no-sew overlays, bold colour-blocking and vibrantly coloured tongue stripe. Salomon’s S/LAB performance team, who crafted the 2013 shoe, are honoured on the lateral forefoot and medial heel, distinctive Salomon lettering accents the lateral ankle and a large ‘S’ decorates the tongue, thus rounding off the XT-6’s memorable aesthetic.

Following its successful start in trail running, the Salomon XT-6 was revived in 2018 by Lifestyle Footwear Program Manager Jean-Philippe Lalonde, who recognised its fashion potential. New releases were boosted by musicians Pusha T and Dev Hynes, who were known for wearing the XT-6 during its early years as a Sportstyle sneaker. An eye-catching collaboration with ethical Japanese designer Children of the Discordance and comfort-focused retailer COSTS in 2022 boosted its popularity ahead of partnerships with streetwear brands Kith and atmos. In 2023, Salomon teamed up with sneaker boutique Footpatrol on the 10Y model, whose vibrant red tones celebrate ten years of the XT-6.

Since then, the silhouette has been worn by influencers like Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid, and reimagined by streetwear retailers Sneakersnstuff, BEAMS and END., luxury label Comme des Garçons and Canadian design studio JJJJound. Salomon has also expanded the range through variants like the waterproof GORE-TEX, the retro Expanse and the sunlight-inspired Skyline.

The Salomon XT-6 began as a high-performance trail-running shoe, but its charismatic style has seen it return as a standout everyday sneaker and a sought-after contemporary fashion item.
