Air Max 1000

Since Nike Air was introduced in the 1970s, it has supported silhouettes both sporting and casual, always evolving with the needs of the time. Many groundbreaking shoes have been designed, with one of the most exciting being the 3D-printed Air Max 1000.

Created by experienced 3D-printing company Zellerfeld, the Nike Air Max 1000 is created using a proprietary FMD printing process which takes high-quality TPU filaments made from a mix of new and recycled materials. These are converted into a thread that is ideal for precision printing before being woven layer-by-layer into a detailed one-piece shoe using more than a million strategically plotted lines.

Despite being formed of a single material, the Air Max 1000 has distinct zones delineated by different printing patterns that result in varying textures. A grid-like lattice covers the top of the foot, with a smoother section underneath and a strikingly rugged ‘mudguard’ layer below that. Dynamically undulating partitions divide these areas, while a subtle parting line separates the sole. Here, the forefoot is supported by soft, squishy foam, and the heel by a visible Air unit inserted into the midsole. The outsole incorporates a classic Waffle tread pattern, with two-different textures for excellent grip.

The Nike Air Max 1000 delivers a powerful blend of comfort, responsiveness and stability for all-day wear. Its lightly textured interior is snug around the foot, ensuring firm lockdown, while its precisely printed structure is highly durable, water-resistant and easy to clean. In addition, the production process is low-waste and incorporates recycled materials, making it a more sustainable option.

Visually, the sculpted outer of the Air Max 1000 is bold and unique. Its wavy design lines and heel Air bubble are inspired by the legendary Air Max 1, yet it drives the line in a compelling new direction with its cutting-edge construction. Alongside its contrastive textures, the shoe features stylishly minimalist branding, with elegantly carved logos on each flank, a Swoosh-adorned tab on the forefoot and eye-catching “air” text down the heel.

The groundbreaking silhouette was showcased at ComplexCon in November 2024. Attendees could learn about the history of Air Max technology and discover the remarkable development process behind the 1000, from the materials used to the iterative prototypes to the printing itself and then the final product. It was even possible to win an exclusive pair by playing a slot machine game put on to celebrate the event being held in Las Vegas. This built incredible hype for the silhouette ahead of its 2025 release as influencers owning the limited colourways took to social media to share their verdicts.

The Nike Air Max 1000 is a futuristic and innovative shoe, both in terms of its design and its production process. Not only does it have a unique look, it is also highly functional, soft and flexible, offering everyday comfort along with long-lasting durability and an on-foot experience unlike anything else around.
