ASICS released the original Gel-DS Trainer in 1995 as a lightweight running shoe that was versatile enough for both everyday training and racing. By 2009, the series had reached its 14th iteration – a popular model filled with the brand’s supportive technologies. Sixteen years later, ASICS revisited the Gel-DS Trainer 14, bringing it back as a comfort-focused lifestyle sneaker with retro style.

The modern ASICS Gel-DS Trainer 14 retains the distinctive asymmetric upper of the original for a bold look. Its breathable underlayer incorporates different mesh materials – one type spreads across the forefoot and heel and another sits between the stripes of the ASICS logos on each flank. A tighter mesh can be found on the lower part of the heel and the tongue, with curved synthetic leather overlays dividing these contrasting panels. The shoe’s off-kilter design is particularly striking on the heel and the slanted eyestay, which bends gently towards the medial forefoot. Recycled elements have been incorporated into the upper and the sockliner is manufactured using an efficient dying process that reduces both water and carbon emissions for added sustainability.

Underfoot, the sole unit has been updated with contemporary materials, but is otherwise similar to the original. It offers a blend of soft foam cushioning and visible Gel for impact protection in the heel. The Trusstic support system remains below the arch of the foot, where it delivers stability and pronation control, helping the wearer to achieve a smooth transition through the foot. Meanwhile, the DuoSole outsole is lightweight and flexible with wet-grip sections alongside blown rubber areas to ensure a cushioned feel and excellent traction.

Along with these performance features, the ASICS Gel-DS Trainer 14 exhibits a captivating style that honours the classic mesh runner look, while its swooping overlays and midsole design add a compelling sleekness. Its visible heel Gel and the glossy panel on the medial forefoot are both eye-catching details, and the branding accents on the heel and tongue bring a touch of elegance to the silhouette.

Just before the spring 2025 release of the Gel-DS Trainer 14, the ASICS Sportstyle team joined forces with long-time design partner Kiko Kostadinov to craft four mesmeric colourways of his UB9-S variant. Inspired by themes of art and simulacrum, they bring together stunning textures and tones representing nature’s relationship with humanity while also symbolising both natural and man-made forms. Kiko’s powerful style infuses the Gel-DS Trainer 14 with a unique aesthetic that has helped to boost the popularity of the general release colourways.

With its eccentric asymmetric upper and heritage-inspired design, the ASICS Gel-DS Trainer 14 has strong fashion appeal, while its sporting technologies are exceptionally comfortable and supportive, making it a great everyday sneaker.
