LeBron James is one of the world’s greatest sports stars. The Nike LeBron basketball shoe launched before his 2003 debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers, leading to an innovative signature series that rivals James’ epic career.

The original LeBron, or Air Zoom Generation, was designed by Tinker Hatfield, Eric Avar and Aaron Cooper. Its durable leather and ballistic nylon upper had a sweat-wicking Nike Sphere collar and stabilising heel clip, its sole responsive Zoom Air, shock-absorbing Nike Air and a sturdy carbon-fibre shank, and its outsole a grippy herringbone tread. James became the Cavaliers’ first Rookie of the Year, setting a strong foundation for the series.

Alongside hard-wearing, secure uppers and responsive, impact-protecting soles, the early Nike LeBron silhouettes introduced innovations like the 2’s secure ankle strap and Pebax frame, the 3’s structural TPU panels, the 4’s distinctive Foamposite shell and Zoom-Air-cushioned drop-in midsole, the 5’s Phyposite carrier, and the 6’s sturdy heel counter and double-stacked heel Zoom Air.

In 2009, Jason Petrie broke new ground with the LeBron 7’s full-length Air Max and Flywire technology. Now permanent lead designer, Petrie upgraded the LeBron 8 with a stabilising lateral outrigger and a lightweight, agile outsole. Meanwhile, stylish Miami-inspired colourways like the ‘South Beach’ popularised the LeBron amongst fashionistas and sneaker enthusiasts.

James’ first NBA Championship came with the Heat and the 2011-12 season’s Nike LeBron 9, whose Hyperfuse upper, dynamic Flywire 3.0 cables, Air Max heel cushioning and Zoom Air forefoot offered propulsion and stability alike. After joining the Los Angeles Lakers, James launched 2018’s Nike LeBron 16 with an even stronger Battleknit 2.0 upper. The 17’s high-volume Air Max unit, dual 15mm Zoom Air pods and snug-fitting Knitposite upper yielded a fourth NBA crown and MVP Finals award alongside the 18, whose energy-returning, full-length Zoom Air sat directly over a U-shaped Air Max heel.

James continued to excel wearing the LeBron 19, with its continuous, interconnected Air Max and Zoom Air chambers, before the low-top LeBron 20 switched to a far more nimble design through dual Zoom Air units and Cushlon foam alongside a stable carbon-fibre shank and minimal upper. This ethos continued into the oyster-inspired 21 and the 22, which added a moulded stability saddle for greater control. In late 2024, James’ first training shoe, the LeBron TR1, came out, its versatile design helping players maximise their workout routines. One year later, the cutting-edge LeBron 23 introduced a drop-in ZoomX midsole, a Cushlon 3.0 carrier and the visually stunning 360-Crown Containment System for incredible energy return, reliable stability and smooth transitions.
