Nike Football

Nike has been designing football boots since the 1970s. Despite a slow start, Nike Football became highly respected in the sport through a combination of careful innovation, intelligent partnerships and iconic silhouettes.

Nike’s earliest football boot, ‘The Nike’, was intended for the 1970 Mexico World Cup, but its delayed 1971 release hindered its success, leading the Football division to rethink its strategy. Apart from 1976’s improved Striker, few significant designs emerged during the ‘70s. Instead, Nike Football focused on sponsoring American teams like the Portland Timbers before expanding abroad to sign England’s Aston Villa in 1982. That year, their European Cup victory brought Nike football boots more widespread acclaim, leading to partnerships with legendary striker Ian Rush and domestic talent Mia Hamm.

At the 1994 World Cup, Nike Football took off as potent Brazilian strike duo Bebeto and Romário wore the Tiempo Premier while winning the tournament. Brazil’s national team signed with Nike in 1996, and skilful striker Ronaldo agreed a lifetime deal that saw him debut the groundbreaking Mercurial at the 1998 World Cup. Rounding out the decade, versatile Nike athlete Brandi Chastain scored the winning penalty for the United States at the 1999 Women’s World Cup.

The celebrated Total 90 arrived in the early 2000s, and the Mercurial series evolved with the Vapor, which Brazilian players wore during their triumphant 2002 World Cup run. Meanwhile, Nike’s ‘Secret Tournament’ concept, which involved superstars like Henry, Totti and Cantona, kept up a string of inventive advertising campaigns that resumed with Ronaldinho’s 2005 ‘Touch of Gold’ video for the launch of the Tiempo Legend and the Joga Bonito campaign for the 2006 World Cup.

Nike’s football boots continued to feature pioneering inventions like the carbon-fibre soleplate and Flywire cables of 2009’s Mercurial Superfly. Its successor appeared at the 2010 World Cup as the ‘Write the Future’ campaign became one of the most shared in internet history thanks to exciting players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2011, Nike extended its contract with creative Brazilian forward Neymar, who informed 2013’s Hypervenom, and in 2014, the Magista franchise drove footballing technology forwards with its Flyknit upper and Dynamic Fit collar. The Nike Phantom followed in 2018, its innovative Ghost Lacing and Quadfit Mesh making it an instant classic.

In the 2020s, cutting-edge materials like Gripknit and Atomknit enhanced performance alongside the innovative Cyclone 360 and Maestro 360 soleplates. Meanwhile, the Mercurial celebrated its 25th anniversary and the Tiempo its 30th. Together with the Phantom, these form the core of Nike Football’s contemporary lineup, delivering high-quality football boots for speed, touch and precision striking. Each franchise is backed by elite players, with Erling Haaland and Alexia Putellas representing the Phantom, Kylian Mbappé and Sam Kerr the Mercurial, and Jamal Musiala the Tiempo.
