GP Challenge tennis shoes
In 2020, Nike released a supportive tennis shoe known as the GP Turbo. Made for hard courts, its focus on powerful cushioning delivered energy return and impact protection, leading to a decent response from the sporting community. Several years later, Nike used this popular design as the basis for an even more effective high-performance silhouette called the GP Challenge.
Nike launched the GP Challenge 1 in the winter of 2023 with a strong mesh upper featuring lightweight no-sew overlays, a rubberised reinforcement over the big toe and a structural panel that connected to the lacing on the lateral side. These features combined to enhance containment, stability and lateral support, while plush heel and tongue padding provided comfort. Dual Zoom Air units in the Phylon foam midsole delivered impact protection and a responsive feeling underfoot, with high-abrasion rubber on the herringbone outsole for durable traction. Lastly, its sturdy midfoot plate worked with the structural panel on the upper to offer solid stability and lockdown. On the court, Jannik Sinner showcased the high-performance qualities of the Nike GP Challenge by wearing it to win multiple Grand Slam titles over the next two seasons, while former world number 1 and multiple Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka demonstrated its ability to support top female players in a series of Player Exclusive colourways.
Following the success of the GP Challenge, Nike launched an updated version called the GP Challenge 1.5 in early 2026. Rather than being a brand new silhouette, the 1.5 took the best aspects of the original and introduced several upgrades that enhanced overall performance. A tighter mesh weave was used to increase durability, a gusset was added to the tongue for firmer lockdown and more space was created in the toe box so that it could accommodate a wider range of foot types. While the midsole remained the same as its predecessor, Nike bulked up the rubber on the outsole’s high-wear zones to improve longevity. A variant with Nike Claybreaker technology was also released with a special tread designed specifically for clay courts. As with its predecessor, players like Sinner and Osaka wore the Nike GP Challenge 1.5 in elite level tournaments, with teenage star Mirra Andreeva claiming her first Grand Slam title in an elegant pink colourway at the 2026 French Open.
The Nike GP Challenge is a strong, stable tennis shoe with propulsive cushioning, firm lateral stability and solid containment.
