Structure running shoes

The Nike Structure franchise emerged in the early 1990s within the Triax running series. Originally designed to offer cushioned support for overpronators, it has since become the brand’s premier stability shoe.

The OG Structure featured a Phylon midsole with forefoot Air and an asymmetrical Air Max heel unit for shock absorbing comfort. Its Footbridge stability device had “deeper and longer” medial posting than previous versions, thus reducing pronation, and its sturdy Heel Hinge eased transitions. The geometric overlays on its straight-lasted mesh upper increased lateral stability and emulated the iconic Air Max aesthetic, while a grippy Waffle outsole with structural heel elements and forefoot flex grooves facilitated smooth, stable movement.

Over the following decades, the Nike Structure introduced innovations like responsive Zoom Air, a decoupled outsole with Nike-Free-inspired elements and a triple-density midsole whose firm medial post was spliced with a medium-density foam and accompanied by a softer crash pad for improved stability, flexibility and impact protection. Meanwhile, gender-specific lasts offered targeted support, and the Footbridge and heel counter were refined to further decelerate pronation and ease the footstrike.

By the 2010s, the Structure had become a go-to daily trainer, including for members of Nike’s Oregon Project running team. Innovation continued, with the Structure 13 decoupling the Zoom Air units to improve flexibility, adding a lockdown-enhancing strap connecting the lacing and heel and inserting a Cuboid Pod into the midsole for smoother transitions. Subsequent models introduced Flywire lacing alongside an internal sleeve and no-sew overlays, improving structure and containment.

2012’s Structure 16 was a more neutral runner, its Dynamic Support System fusing dual-density foams in a co-moulded process that produced a lightweight feel and natural transitions. Two years later, the Nike Structure 18 refocused on stability via a double-layered Flymesh upper and a triple-density Stock Fit midsole featuring a firm medial cage. Structures 20 through 22 all combined Phylon and Cushlon foams alongside a Dynamic Fit mesh upper, before 2020’s Nike Structure 23 optimised for versatility, security and speed, completely removing Flywire and opting for a single-density CMP 010 foam midsole. Stability was achieved through high sidewalls, a wide base, a woven heel with a rigid counter and a vertical transition channel beside an impact-absorbing crash rail on the outsole. The Structure 25 boasted new stabilising components including a plastic heel clip and specialised Midfoot Support System in its stacked Cushlon 3.0 midsole.

In late 2024, Nike announced the Structure as the ‘supportive cushioning’ franchise in its new road-running lineup. The Nike Structure 26 launched in 2025 with a full-length ReactX midsole and updated Midfoot Support System, providing motion control, biomechanical stability and comfort through geometry rather than overly rigid materials. Its High Abrasion Rubber outsole targeted high-impact zones for durable grip, and increased padding created a flexible yet stable fit. Olympic champion Cole Hocker and teammate Cooper Teare promoted the shoe in a video where Hocker praised it for preventing injury by keeping his ankles, knees and whole body “moving in the right direction”.

The Nike Structure is one of the brand’s oldest running shoe franchises, and yet it continues to provide athletes with the most consistently effective stability features for long hours of well-supported training.
