Nike Training
Nike’s athletic shoes vary from ones tailored to specific activities to those aimed at multi-sport training. While many early silhouettes existed in the former category, some like the Waffle Trainer were more versatile. However, in the mid-1980s, Nike Training created a do-it-all shoe that altered the trajectory of both the brand and the wider sporting world.
In 1986, Tinker Hatfield designed a training silhouette that could be worn throughout his exercise routine, which included lifting weights, running drills and playing racquetball and basketball. The result was the groundbreaking Air Trainer Hi – a well-cushioned shoe with a stabilising lateral outrigger, an adjustable forefoot strap for lockdown and a partial cupsole that provided heel support and forefoot flexibility. Endorsements from tennis star John McEnroe and multi-sport athlete Bo Jackson demonstrated its unmatched versatility, which launched the new cross-training footwear category.
Throughout the 1990s, gym culture grew, and Nike Training’s all-purpose Air Trainer series with it. When CrossFit was founded in 2000, Nike responded with innovations like its lightweight, flexible Free technology, which facilitated more diverse training, alongside the SPARQ Training Program, which delivered workouts designed to enhance speed, power, agility, reactions and quickness. In the late 2000s, its training collection was broadened with the Romaleos weightlifting shoe, whose TPU heel wedge and midfoot straps gave it the stability and power to support medal-winning performances at the 2008 Olympics, thus establishing the series as an icon of the weightlifting community.
Cross-training continued to gain popularity, and in 2010, Nike launched the Training Club app, giving better access to personal fitness advice and blended workouts. To supplement its hybrid exercise routines, the brand developed the Metcon as an all-round training shoe with a stable heel for strength work, a flexible forefoot and breathable upper for cardio and a special midfoot wrap for rope-climbing. Debuted by renowned CrossFit athlete Josh Bridges in 2014, it was a huge success, and today the Metcon is regarded by many as the best cross-training shoe available. In 2018, its stability was combined with the lightweight flexibility of the Free sole on the Free Metcon, which is more suited to cardio, HIIT and agility workouts.
Nike Training expanded its collection into the 2020s, launching a CrossFit-style lifting shoe called the Savaleos in 2021, followed by a chain of fitness studios in 2023. Set across separate divisions for strength, running and training, it was supported by updated versions of the Romaleos and Free Metcon models, which were released in 2024 alongside the LeBron TR1 – a hybrid workout shoe designed in collaboration with basketball legend LeBron James. In 2025, these were joined by a new Metcon and the minimal Nike Free 2025, whose outstanding comfort and unparalleled flexibility make it ideal for a variety of light workouts.
Today, Nike Training offers a broad range of innovative footwear to support any exercise routine, from Olympic weightlifting to the most varied cross-training session, thus helping all athletes improve their general fitness and lead healthier, more active lives.
