The Gel-Quantum franchise originated in the early 2010s, when ASICS pushed the boundaries of its ever-evolving Gel cushioning through a new kind of visible technology. The brand had been using Gel as a shock-absorbing material since the 1980s, with visible versions available from the mid-2000s on models like the Gel-Kinsei. After a challenging three-year production period, the Gel-Quantum 360 was released in 2015, launching the now-iconic series.

Each ASICS Gel-Quantum is founded upon two principles: structural stability and comfortable cushioning, ideas following from the initial concept of ‘Meat and Bone’ that the OG model was built around. The unique 360-degree visible Gel midsole adds the desired ‘wow factor’ as soft foam fills the rest of the midsole to ensure maximum comfort and impact protection, and an integrated Trusstic support system takes care of stability and balance. Alongside these cutting-edge innovations, Gel-Quantum silhouettes contain lightweight, breathable mesh uppers with synthetic overlays that allow flexible movement without compromising on durability. Other typical features include sturdy heel counters that lock the foot in place and provide a secure fit, and hard-wearing rubber outsoles for reliable grip.

The ASICS Gel-Quantum series features several models in the brand’s Sportstyle category, which was established in 2019 to encourage active daily lifestyles by adding high-tech sporting components to casual sneakers. The 360 is the flagship, with its striking 5D print upper detailing and all-round visible Gel. The 180 and 90 models show off their own versions of this, with a smaller amount of Gel in the heel and more foam through the forefoot, while the Kei emphasises lightweight comfort and the Lyte streetwear aesthetics. The premium Gel-Quantum Kinetic is designed to power stylish urban explorations through futuristic Scutoid Gel technology and a look inspired by iconic Gel-cushioned shoes like the Nimbus. Many of these shoes incorporate sustainable elements, such as the FF Blast Bio foam of the 360 Utility variant, which uses natural material extracted from sugarcane, or the upper of the 180 VIII, which is made using at least 20% recycled content.

In 2025, ASICS celebrated ten years of the Gel-Quantum series with exciting new silhouettes. The Gel-Quantum 1 360 AMP was launched in an elegant collaboration with Canadian design studio JJJJound and its pioneering visible Gel technology showcased at a pop-up event during Paris Fashion Week. On social media, photographer and videographer Caroline Lublin teamed up with ASICS and Naked Copenhagen on a release campaign where Lublin speaks about the joy of movement while spending a day traversing the Danish city in the AMP. Just one month later, ASICS announced the unconventional and boldly stylish Gel-Quantum 360 1, which would also be released through a collaboration, this time with Australian apparel brand Above the Clouds.

Over the course of a decade, the ASICS Gel-Quantum series has become one of the most beloved franchises in the brand’s history. Each and every shoe provides a supportive blend of plush cushioning and solid stability, with a captivating and distinctive style centred around the visible Gel showpiece.
