During the Y2K era, footwear companies looked to the future with forward-thinking designs like 1999’s PUMA Mostro. Created as a trail shoe, its unconventional inspirations – a groundbreaking 1968 Tahoe ‘brush spike’ running silhouette and a laid-back 1980s surf shoe – have seen it go from cult classic to modern-day icon.

The Mostro features a flexible synthetic upper with a smooth Lycra lining that moulds snugly around the foot. Its asymmetric design incorporates minimal panelling, with a PUMA Formstrip below a fin-shaped overlay on the lateral flank and a rubberised tab over the heel. An adjustable, Velcro-fastened hook-and-loop strap stretches across the medial side, passing through a slit in the midsole to offer a secure, personalised fit.

The PUMA Mostro’s low-profile sole is covered in rubber spikes that wrap around the edges of the upper, giving comprehensive traction. Wing-shaped tread pads beneath the forefoot and heel enhance its grip, while structural TPU elements support the arch. A plush Ortholite foam insole delivers lightweight comfort without compromising the shoe’s slimline elegance or grounded feel.

Sleek and refined yet boldly offbeat, the Mostro is an eccentric sneaker. The asymmetry of its upper produces an intriguing aesthetic, while its branding, which includes a cat logo on the heel and a PUMA tongue patch, brings classic style. Its flamboyant outsole is based on designer Peter Schmid’s original concept, with extended spikes that originally appeared on the 2004 Mostro Ur and today link the many Mostro variants, from the materially diverse Mesh, Leather, Camo and Fey Satin models to the vegan-friendly OG Prime, the translucent Jelly, the rugged XC and the eye-catching Metallic.

In the early 2000s, the PUMA Mostro was known for its experimental design, which led to it being worn by Scarlett Johansson in science fiction movie The Island. In 2023, rappers A$AP Rocky and Skepta were seen wearing it ahead of a comeback sparked by a collaboration with high fashion label Ottolinger. A 2024 general release followed alongside quirky collaborations with A$AP Rocky, streetwear label Aries and vintage collector Inside Tag, as well as a sophisticated two-pack from Canadian design studio JJJJound.

The Mostro’s extensive campaign launched with a short film directed by and starring A$AP Rocky and continued with a celebratory event at New York Fashion Week called ‘Welcome to the Amazing Mostro Show’. The surreal, convention-defying experience showed off the rebellious silhouette to onlookers including fashion influencers like Emily Ratajkowski. Well-known New York photographer Chris Maggio later showcased the Mostro’s street-ready style in a series of images taken across his home city, before American model Amelia Gray continued her collaboration with PUMA by unveiling a pair of captivating Mostro colourways in 2025.

The PUMA Mostro looks as stunningly futuristic now as it did back in 1999, while the huge range of variants mean there is a design for everyone. With its gracefully slimline build, unforgettable spiky sole and sleek comfort, it makes a powerful fashion statement.
