Astrograbber
In the 1970s, Nike produced a series of high-performing American football boots, some of which were optimised for the artificial pitches that were popular at the time. One of these was the Astrograbber – a lightweight, low-profile shoe that was fast, grippy, comfortable and supportive. To celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024, Nike revisited the vintage sporting silhouette, bringing it back as a stylish everyday sneaker.
The Nike Astrograbber features a stripped back upper made from a combination of leather, suede or nubuck, though some colourways sport a breathable canvas mesh instead. Whichever material is used, the overall arrangement remains consistent, with durable stitching across the midfoot, a straight-edged eyestay that comes to a dynamic point at the forefoot and a curvaceous, hourglass-shaped heel panel. Meanwhile, a soft nylon tongue and breathable inner lining keep things comfortable around the entire foot.
In homage to the Astrograbber’s sporting heritage, the modern version is founded upon a sturdy sole unit based on Bill Bowerman’s grippy original. Sleek and low-profile, it incorporates a textured toe cap for protection, while thick, square-shaped lugs form the reliable Waffle tread pattern of its durable rubber outsole for classic traction.
The Nike Astrograbber blends compelling vintage aesthetics with stylish minimalist effects for a look that is undeniably retro and yet also appealingly modern. Bold Swooshes emerge from the broad heel panel to reach along each flank, while a throwback Nike patch adorns the tongue and capitalised lettering the heel. Its Waffle sole brings further old-school vibes, adding a nod to the 1970s American football boot that completes the silhouette with a touch of sporty flair.
In 2024, luxury American fashion label Bode helped relaunch the Astrograbber in a partnership that produced two contrasting designs based on some of the classic 1970s colourways. One comes in premium black leather with cream-coloured Swooshes, while the other has a light beige canvas upper and plush suede overlays. Both feature a set of quirky lace charms that include baseballs, lobsters, cows and American footballs. The stylish collaboration was highly sought-after and was soon pictured on the feet of celebrities like Jeremy Allen White, who is famed for his love of retro Nike sneakers.
The success of the first Bode Astrograbbers brought about two more editions which were released via a campaign with Nike athlete and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The American football star appeared in a series of images captured in New Orleans just before Bode’s runway show at the 2025 GQ Bowl fashion event, where the new Nike Astrograbber colourways were showcased by Chase himself. Following this, demand was high for more versions of the retro silhouette, and it wasn’t long before Nike obliged with several general releases.
Rich in its heritage, generous in its comfort and understated yet timeless in its style, the Nike Astrograbber is a classy sneaker with a versatile aesthetic that looks great wherever it goes.
