In 1966, PUMA launched its King football boot with the help of Portuguese legend Eusebio. Over subsequent decades, it became a sporting icon worn by legends of the game like Pelé, Cruyff and Maradona. In 1999, PUMA created the King Indoor for those playing street football and court-based variants like futsal. A flat-soled boot with a wonderful balance of comfort and traction, its classy style saw it transcend the sport and return as a nostalgic sneaker in the mid-2020s.

The upper of the PUMA King Indoor is made of high-quality leather, with supportive overlays on the midfoot and heel alongside a broad eyestay and sidewall Formstrips. Its foldover tongue nods to its footballing past but can also be removed for a more personalised look. Meanwhile, carefully stitched lines secure the panelling for maximum durability, and a soft textile lining rests comfortably against the foot.

The King Indoor features a flat sole unit optimised for asphalt and other hard surfaces. Its midsole is filled with comfort-giving EVA foam, while its split outsole is made of non-marking rubber. Swirling grip lines and herringbone tread patterns offer outstanding traction, and a sturdy shank supports the midfoot.

The PUMA King Indoor is covered in energetic design lines, from the curvaceous stitching effects meandering across its forefoot to the wavy contours worked through its midsole and the varied grip patterns etched into its outsole. An oval-shaped cutout in the heel overlay frames the brand’s famous Cat logo, with another on the outsole and a final one leaping over the PUMA lettering on the retro-inspired tongue. This throwback feature celebrates classic sporting footwear and the deep-rooted legacy of the King franchise with its eye-catching golden outline and classy logo, which is repeated on the lateral flank.

While the original King Indoor was beloved by European football fans and youth subcultures, the 2024 reissue has achieved much broader appeal through captivating release campaigns, distinctive colourways and stylish collaborations. British photographer Ewen Spencer and stylist Rhiannon Barry produced the launch campaign, capturing the unique fashion of London’s early 2000s grime scene – a time and place that Spencer himself had come to prominence documenting and which was central to the history of the King Indoor. The campaign showcases the silhouette’s nostalgic appeal, giving it a successful return.

In March 2025, PUMA linked up with streetwear brand KidSuper to create a collaborative version with unique elements based on the artistic style of founder Colm Dillane. Meanwhile, April’s Royalty Pack honours iconic Puma King-wearing players by incorporating the colours of great footballing nations. Its launch campaign celebrates the street footballers the King Indoor was originally made for, depicting female street-ballers wearing the suave, suede-covered sneakers. Later that summer, Dutch brand Lack of Guidance collaborated on a sleek, matte black edition that is the perfect complement to the respected label’s nostalgic, football-inspired apparel.

With its stylish retro aesthetic, reliable old-school tech and updated material composition, the PUMA King Indoor is a comfortable yet captivating everyday sneaker infused with sporting heritage and footballing flair.
