The Nike Pegasus running shoe is one of the most iconic pieces of athletic footwear in the brand’s extensive back catalogue. For multiple decades, it has provided runners with a dependable shoe for day-to-day training, and 2021’s Pegasus 38 is no different, its high-quality build delivering exactly the kind of support its fans have come to expect.

The upper of the Nike Pegasus 38 is made from a soft, breathable mesh material whose flexible nature allows it to mould to the foot over time for a snug fit. Webbing has been added through the midfoot to enhance this effect, with more space opened up in the forefoot to allow the toes more wiggle-room. Extra-thick lace loops help to secure the foot firmly in place, while the tongue has been filled with additional padding to reduce lace pressure. It has also been lengthened and connected to the inner, thus improving comfort over the top of the foot and preventing the tongue from slipping down during extended runs.

Underfoot, the midsole contains 2mm more React foam than its predecessor for an even more cushioned feeling and additional responsiveness. An energy-returning Zoom Air unit appears in the forefoot, giving a springy sensation when pushing off from the toe into the next step. In the heel, the shape of the sole goes a little deeper than before to remove any heel slippage, which ensures that the Nike Pegasus 38 is reliably stable. Meanwhile, the outsole has a series of flex grooves that allow natural movement, and its enhanced tread design is formed of durable rubber so that it delivers high-quality traction over many miles.

Aesthetically, the Pegasus 38 keeps things classy and minimal, with a small swoosh on the medial heel and a larger outline of one on the lateral flank. Zigzag stitching lines the eyestay and a narrow patch stretches along the centre of the tongue, its surface displaying the name of the model. Since its release in 2021, there have been a host of memorable colourways and a few collaborations, including with London-based visual artist Joy Yamusangie and Brooklyn-based illustrator Jordan Moss.
