Nike’s initial success was built on high-performance athletic footwear, but by the late 1970s, the brand had begun producing sportswear as well. Renowned for being lightweight, comfortable and supportive, Nike’s technical garments paved the way for more innovative activewear, culminating in the groundbreaking Nike Tech apparel line, which skilfully bridges the gap between functional athletic clothing and everyday fashion.

The iconic 1978 Windrunner was one of Nike’s earliest pieces of activewear, its lightweight, breathable and weather-resistant materials helping athletes train more effectively throughout the rainy off-season. It was incredibly popular, going on to become an inspirational symbol of technical innovation. Decades later, Nike employees Jarrett Reynolds and Michael Leon drew on the Windrunner during their 2005 side project which aimed to create advanced athletic apparel. Their bold experiments with technical fabrics and urban-friendly materials resulted in the first Nike Tech Pack in 2007. Featuring a new take on the classic Windrunner alongside other technical clothing, it incorporated high-tech fabrics fused together using no-sew techniques that harness ultrasonic waves to replace traditional stitching with welded seams. This made everything functionally lightweight and comfortable while offering a clean, streamlined aesthetic.

More Tech Packs were released as the technology continued to evolve, and in 2013, the franchise took a huge leap forward with the Nike Tech Fleece. Once again centred around the Windrunner, its key innovation is a three-layered material consisting of a cushy, heat-retaining spacer foam between two pieces of double-sided jersey fabric. Tech Fleece is incredibly versatile, keeping athletes warm and comfortable without weighing them down or inhibiting movement.

Subsequent Nike Tech Packs contained Tech Fleece silhouettes from crewnecks to trousers, with new technologies like Tech Knit and functional features such as tape-reinforced Tech pockets integrated along the way. Endorsements from legendary athletes including LeBron James, Rafael Nadal and Neymar increased popularity, while Tech Fleece tracksuits became a staple of modern streetwear through their association with rappers like Skepta and Central Cee. Drake’s 2023 Nocta Tech Fleece releases further enhanced the cultural impact of Nike Tech, introducing more laidback, loose-fitting options that would become a mainstay of the brand’s future offerings.

Nike added the Tech Woven and Tech Shori collections in 2024 and 2025 respectively, each made from a different performance material. Woven is lightweight, stretchy and manoeuvrable, while Shori is more midweight and tightly knit to suit fast-changing urban environments, but both incorporate Dri-FIT technology to keep the wearer warm and dry alongside adjustable bungee cords and two-way zips for customisation. Finely embroidered logos and other stylish details like the Windrunner’s heritage-inspired 26-degree chevron pattern add to the charismatic look of each Tech garment.

Although Nike Tech is rooted in the brand’s innovative history, its current lineup of technical clothing is at the cutting-edge of contemporary activewear. From the lightweight insulation of Tech Fleece to the articulated fit of Tech Woven and the weatherproof comfort of Tech Shori, every piece is designed to offer athletes enhanced movement and style in a range of sporting and casual contexts.
