SB Air Force 1 skate shoes
Bruce Kilgore’s Air Force 1 originally launched in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to contain Nike Air technology. Decades later, it has permeated fashion culture and yet remains an icon of sporting innovation. In 2026, Nike SB chose to honour this incredible heritage by selecting the silhouette to become its latest skateboarding redesign: the SB Air Force 1.
The Nike SB Air Force 1 has an upper made from durable suede and leather with turn and stitch overlays secured by double lines of thread for maximum longevity. The toe profile has been reworked to offer a more refined fit and consistent flick, while the rounded laces and thick, cushy tongue further enhance durability. Memory foam collar inserts provide cushioned comfort around the ankle and heel before combining with the stretchy internal straps and traditional lacing system to deliver secure lockdown as rows of perforations ventilate the toe box.
The sole unit of the SB Air Force 1 retains its sturdy stitched-in cupsole construction and has been re-engineered for superior skating performance. A half-length midsole featuring EVA foam and Air cushioning brings comfortable shock absorption to the heel, while the auxetic forefoot is slim and flexible, thus ensuring great boardfeel as it protects the toes. Over the top is a soft Dreamcell insole, and beneath is an updated version of the distinctive Air Force 1 outsole with a flexible rubber tread featuring more traction lines alongside classic elements including pivot circles, thick perimeter lugs and star-shaped nodes on the forefoot and heel for comprehensive traction and board control. By reducing the materials used, Nike SB has also achieved a more lightweight build, which improves the shoe’s all-round skating capabilities.
As well as being a powerful performance silhouette for the skateboarding community, the Nike SB Air Force 1 honours Kilgore’s iconic original by preserving its stylish look. Elements such as the custom SB-1 lace dubrae and Nike SB-branded heel tab and tongue patch evoke heritage vibes, while the sidewall Swooshes and embossed midsole text also stay true to the 1982 version. In fact, aesthetically, it is hard to tell the SB Air Force 1 apart from its basketball or lifestyle counterparts, ensuring that it can flourish both functionally and stylistically.
Ahead of the release of the suave ‘Light Orewood Brown’ debut colourway in April 2026, twelve members of the Nike SB skate team toured the silhouette across five American cities along the East Coast’s Interstate 95 highway, including Baltimore and New York City. Known as the Creased tour, it encouraged skaters to embrace the wear-and-tear of skating in their new SB Air Force 1s as professionals like Karim Callender and Poe Pinson showcased its supportive, skate-ready design and appealing retro look.
With its faithful style and innovatively re-engineered design, the Nike SB Air Force 1 is both an outstanding performance skate shoe and a classy nod to a timeless icon of the brand.
