Air Force 1 Wild
Nike’s legendary Air Force 1 was first released as a basketball shoe in the early 1980s, but over time it has become one of the brand’s most beloved lifestyle models. In this form, it has been redesigned several times, and in 2023, it was given a more outdoor-focused build with the release of the Air Force 1 Wild.
Having been created to be worn in nature, the Nike Air Force 1 Wild features a number of alterations which make it sturdy and hard-wearing. The outer blends strong mesh and durable suede panelling, with extra stitching that helps hold everything together. Some of the overlays have been reshaped, including the eyestay, which incorporates both traditional eyelets and webbed loops to keep the rope-style laces firmly in place. On top of this, the tongue has been extended and a pull tab attached to its peak, making it easier to get the shoe on.
Inside the shoe, a bouncy cushion has been placed against the heel for extra-soft support, while the sole unit has an intriguing look both around the sides and underneath. The midsole is wrapped in a layer of textile that recalls some of Nike’s other outdoor-ready models with its distinctive grid pattern. Underfoot, the tread design has been completely rearranged, firstly through the jagged-edged central portion that pays homage to the OG with flashes of concentric circles, and then along the sides, which are supported by tooth-shaped grip pads. More linear traction lines then ripple across the toe and heel before reaching up over the midsole to deliver added protection at each end.
When the Nike Air Force 1 Wild first came out in 2023, the colourways fit the function as each was decorated in rustic tones that match its rugged build. In 2024, the same principle was applied to a new set of designs, demonstrating that this robust, boot-like sneaker is made for exploring wild landscapes.
