In the mid-2010s, Nike’s running range was becoming ever more sophisticated, but many people just wanted a reliable and accessible shoe for daily training, so the brand launched the Winflo – a versatile silhouette for casual runners.

Early Nike Winflo models feature a breathable engineered mesh upper with a structured heel, minimal welded overlays and densely woven areas for durability. Flywire lacing combines with an internal heel counter to secure the foot, and a soft lining supplements the plush spacer mesh tongue and collar padding to ensure comfort. The full-length Cushlon foam incorporates heel Zoom Air for cushioning and bounce, with ridged sides aiding compression and enhancing responsiveness. Soft, tacky Duralon rubber makes the Waffle-inspired outsole extra-grippy as its flex grooves allow natural movement and its longitudinal cutout reduces weight. Meanwhile, the Shield variation offers a water-repellent option with enhanced wet-weather traction.

Minimal alterations occur until 2019’s more streamlined Winflo 6, which has a second Zoom Air unit in the forefoot for stability and responsiveness. Lacking Flywire lacing, it creates lockdown through a partially gusseted tongue, reinforced eyelets and a redesigned heel with a scooped collar and tapered midsole that improves comfort around the Achilles. On the outsole, diamond-shaped medial lugs and ridged lateral tread lines produce firm traction and a segmented heel crash pad increases impact protection.

In the early 2020s, the Nike Winflo 7 added more foam and larger forefoot Zoom Air for greater comfort, responsiveness and durability alongside smoother transitions. Rippling tread patterns bring firmer wet and dry grip, while enhanced synthetic yarns make the upper more lightweight and secure, and the extra eyelet that was removed from the 6 returns for lacing versatility. Its successor has a breathable translucent mesh upper that reveals its modern Flywire cables, with a fully gusseted tongue for powerful lockdown, and a fused toe panel for extra durability. The Winflo 9 features a softer, more flexible and form-fitting upper that combines breathable areas with durable stripes. Instead of Flywire, an internal band and cuffed eyelets secure the midfoot, while Zoom Air has been removed in favour of a full-length Nike Dot Weld Air unit and softer Cushlon foam that delivers enhanced cushioning and responsiveness.

In 2024, Nike gave the Winflo 11 a thick, well-padded, highly breathable engineered mesh upper that incorporates recycled materials, just like its predecessor. Its elasticated midfoot band is more accommodating and its MR-10 last provides a consistent fit, with a spacious forefoot and reflective details. The tall, plush Cushlon 3.0 midsole has a broader heel for stable comfort, and its gentle curve encourages forward motion, while its hard-wearing Waffle-style outsole is divided through the midfoot, delivering strong traction as its deeper grooves enhance durability and flexibility. For wet-weather runners, the waterproof GORE-TEX version offers a tougher, more dynamic tread pattern and a warming heathered collar.
