On’s Cloudmonster series was launched in the early 2020s, providing runners with well-crafted shoes to enhance their training routines. In 2024, the brand released the Cloudmonster Hyper – a powerful running trainer designed using data from professional athletes.

The sole unit of the On Cloudmonster Hyper brings together two types of foam: a firm layer of Helion set beneath a softer layer of premium Helion HF. Also used on elite racing shoes, the latter material dominates the forefoot, while the former takes up more room in the heel alongside the brand’s trademark CloudTec cushioning. This design delivers high levels of energy return and shock absorption, with the shoe’s forefoot rocker leading the wearer into a propulsive forward-rolling motion.

On has purposely omitted the rigid Speedboard found in the midsole of other Cloudmonster models as a way of reducing weight and shortening the recovery period required after training sessions. As a result, the Cloudmonster Hyper is the lightest shoe in the series to date. Its durable rubber outsole has a complex tread pattern that produces excellent grip on a range of running surfaces, even in wet weather, with broad flex grooves set into it to allow natural movement of the foot. Despite the shoe’s stacked midsole, it still provides a stable base for the runner thanks to its sturdy sidewalls and good torsional rigidity.

The On Cloudmonster Hyper’s microfibre upper has been engineered to be breathable enough that it prevents overheating without compromising on strength or flexibility. This means that it moulds comfortably around the foot and makes running easy. In addition, the reworked eyestay design and silicone-infused laces combine with the semi-gusseted tongue and solid heel padding to secure the foot firmly in place. 85% of the upper is made using recycled materials, so it is a sustainable option as well.

Visually, the Cloudmonster Hyper is both bold and stylish. Its bulky sole unit gives the shoe a strong look, while its sleek upper features elegant branding, such as various On logos and a line of “On Running” text printed in capital letters down the lateral flank. The left insole also carries the brand’s logo, while the other displays the words “Fresh Legs Fast Legs”, thus reflecting the benefits this trainer aims to deliver.
