During the 1970s, running became a popular hobby, so PUMA responded by designing an innovative silhouette optimised for jogging. Called the Easy Rider, it delivered excellent support through a high-tech outsole, data-driven upper and comfort-giving midsole. Its 1977 release eventually led to a whole family of ‘Rider’ running shoes, which were honoured in 2024 when the PUMA Easy Rider returned as a casual sneaker.

The PUMA Easy Rider features a mixed-material upper of flexible nylon textiles, durable suede overlays and synthetic leather Formstrips. The last shape of the original shoe was designed based on years of research into the anatomy of the running foot, so both it and the modern rendition flex naturally during movement. Alongside this, its soft lining and nylon tongue work with its dependable lacing structure and sturdy heel counter to provide great containment and all-day comfort.

The Easy Rider is supported by a wedge sole whose broad heel emulates the stability of the 1977 shoe. Lightweight ProFoam fills the midsole, offering a soft yet propulsive step, with comfort further enhanced by a cushy Ortholite sockliner. Its “Federbein” outsole, which was revolutionary on its introduction in the 1970s, delivers outstanding traction and durability across a range of surfaces. Conical lugs appear across it in two different sizes, the taller ones creating grip while also absorbing impacts and the shorter ones strategically positioned to protect high-wear areas and enhance longevity.

With its sleek, heritage design, the PUMA Easy Rider’s classy aesthetic exudes retro charm. The striking outsole extends over the toe and heel, with its bold studs standing out as they reach up the back of the foot. Here, a small window in the heel counter reveals the brand’s dynamic Cat logo, which appears again alongside PUMA lettering on the vintage tongue patch. Eye-catching golden foil branding on the lateral flank also incorporates Easy Rider text as it sits above the swooping Formstrip to complete the suave style of this throwback sneaker.

A wholesome launch campaign announced the return of the Easy Rider at the beginning of 2024. Celebrating family and childhood in a series of intimate images, it highlights the importance of histories and heirlooms being passed down through the generations. The brand has also honoured the silhouette’s incredible legacy with versions made from various high-quality materials and variants like the Palais Artisan, whose Moroccan-inspired, all-leather design elevates the PUMA Easy Rider to new levels of elegance.

Meanwhile, partnerships with motorsports companies like Porsche and BMW have produced other unique editions, and the Harry Potter collaboration has delivered a one-of-a-kind sneaker filled with Quidditch-related accents. PUMA has also made the Easy Rider part of its growing collection with KidSuper, releasing a reimagined version with luxurious cashmere overlays moulded into curvaceous shapes that give it a compelling and quirky look.

Archival aesthetics combined with modern materials and a supportive design make the PUMA Easy Rider a nostalgic sneaker that effortlessly supports the wearer through laid-back days in relaxing comfort and timeless style.
