In 2023, New Balance began work on a trio of running-inspired lifestyle sneakers as part of its ever-growing ABZORB franchise. The last to be released was a forward-thinking silhouette rooted in the brand’s sporting history but with a bold, contemporary design. Its name is the New Balance 5030.

The upper of the 5030 is a seamless piece of soft, sculpted fabric or synthetic material with generous internal padding that delivers outstanding comfort around the entire foot. A single panel extends down the heel spine, providing extra support to the rearfoot, while the cushy tongue has mesh along its sides for a touch of breathability. Several lace loops punctuate the centre of the tongue, securing the foot with the help of the cuffed eyelets, which are located internally to increase durability. The uppermost eyelets punched into the collar are reinforced for longevity, with an additional hole for those requiring extra-firm lockdown.

The New Balance 5030’s midsole incorporates ABZORB cushioning alongside large ABZORB SBS heel pods for solid impact protection, reliable compression resistance and supportive comfort. This chunky foam stack has been sculpted into a curving rockered shape that references its sporting influences while delivering an energetic step. Its durable rubber outsole is decoupled to facilitate natural flexion and fluid transitions, with geometric tread patterns and micro grip lines producing excellent traction from heel to toe. Lastly, the forefoot offers a wide, stable platform for the wearer to land on.

Inspired by the 1992 New Balance 530 running shoe, the 5030 features a series of curvilinear bands that flow gracefully across its padded outer. These are accompanied by debossed ‘N’ logos on the flanks and a subtle ‘NB’ tongue emblem for a stylishly minimalist effect. Colourways incorporate everything from glossy, futuristic metallics to vibrant, eye-catching tones and elegant neutrals. Each edition is elevated by the captivating appearance of the exaggerated midsole, whose sweeping contours echo those of the upper, thus giving the 5030 a stunning, fashion-forward aesthetic while retaining the core DNA of the brand’s classic running shoes.

The New Balance 5030 was unveiled in January 2026 when Italian streetwear pioneers Slam Jam revealed an experimental chrome and black version during Paris Fashion Week. This eye-catching shoe generated plenty of hype around the general release, which came in April with the launch of two charismatic colourways: ‘Magic Blue’ and ‘Electric Indigo’, each with a dramatic colour fade.

In crafting the 5030, New Balance harnessed the power of its own sporting heritage to produce a silhouette with an avant-garde, boundary-pushing look and a contemporary cushioning foundation that offers reliable everyday comfort.
