Nike’s legendary Air Max line is known for being innovative and forward-thinking, with the brand constantly reinventing its bouncy cushioning for each new generation. In 2026, Nike’s Air Manufacturing engineers developed the next evolution of this iconic technology, the Air Liquid Max.

The Nike Air Liquid Max’s three-layered upper features a highly breathable mesh underlay and a durable yet flexible rubberised nanoweave, with strategically placed tactile nodes for added structure. Nylon eyelets form the traditional lacing, which pairs with the slim tongue and sturdy heel counter to secure the foot. A heat-pressed mudguard protectively wraps the shoe, offering side-to-side support, with TPU elements providing extra reinforcement at the heel and toe.

For the sole unit of the Air Liquid Max, Nike created a complex, precisely engineered, full-length Max unit that delivers smooth, comfortable cushioning exactly where it is needed. Internal cutouts reduce weight and increase flexibility, while the point-loaded airbags evenly distribute pressure and the upward-curving geometry allows effortless, flowing movement. Soft and stiff areas keep the foot stable without reducing plushness, and pieces of cushy Phylon foam sit atop each pod. A thin sheet of TPU separates these from the comfortable drop-in Cushlon midsole, whose high-sidewalls gently cradle the foot. Circular rubber pads beneath each Air Max element then produce reliable grip, and the whole thing sits low-to-the-ground for a sleek, minimalist walking experience.

Bold and innovative, the Nike Air Liquid Max both looks and feels unique. Its textured nanoprint upper creates a distinctive aesthetic, while sidewall Swooshes add a classic touch alongside the striking Liquid Max branding on the tongue. Translucent panels in the negative space of the sole unit reveal the foam midsole, with its subtle logo, and Air Max lettering adorns the toe of the outsole and the heel spine. While its point-loaded Air Max system was inspired by 2021’s Air Max Scorpion and the DN8 was used as a further technological reference point, the Liquid Max’s eye-catching appearance was derived from the poison dart frog, with its textured upper having an almost amphibian-like quality and its Air Max pods based on the animal’s sticky toe pads.

The Air Liquid Max launch colourway was released on Air Max Day, 2026, in vivid green and contrastive black tones that evoke those of the brightly-coloured Central American frog that inspired it. Lustrous Chrome Swooshes complete the look, which was teased by rapper Yeat when he wore the ‘Green Apple’ edition in the music video for his atmospheric track ‘Made It on Our Own’. Around the same time, the first Liquid Max collaboration was announced – a sophisticated all-black colourway with Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fragment.
