Since the launch of the Air Max 1 in 1987, Nike has made its visible cushioning system central to the brand’s identity. As such, the line is honoured annually at a special Air Max Day event where both retro models and original silhouettes are revealed. In 2023, this celebration delivered an exciting new sneaker called the Air Max Pulse.

The Nike Air Max Pulse has a textile mesh upper with a durable synthetic mudguard and a sturdy rubberised heel counter. Its structured panelling delivers lateral stability, with generous padding used throughout to provide snug comfort, prevent lace bite and aid containment. A partially gusseted tongue combines with nylon lace loops to further enhance lockdown, and a runner-style dual eyelet has been added beside the collar for extra security. Lastly, reflective details illuminate the shoe in low-light conditions.

The sole of the Air Max Pulse takes the stacked heel from the supportive Air Max 270 and reworks it to include a point-loaded Air system with a plastic clip that spreads the wearer’s weight across targeted areas. This produces a unique cushioning experience that is responsive and protects the wearer from impacts, while a slab of plush foam ensures outstanding comfort. Wide in both the forefoot and heel, it offers firm stability, with a durable textile wrap covering the heel section. The rubber outsole features Waffle-style lugs interspersed with flex grooves that give reliable traction without hindering manoeuvrability.

Visually, the Nike Air Max Pulse is inspired by London’s raw, brutalist architecture and lively underground music scene. It also reflects the shoe’s athletic heritage with a sporty look that skilfully blends futuristic elements and casual urban vibes. Vacuum-sealed accents are paired with multiple Swooshes, refined stitching and rows of perforations, while a new Air Max logo adorns the tongue and insole. The silhouette’s stunning centrepiece is its distinctive Air Max unit, which honours the line as it boldly elevates the wearer.

Alongside the release of the Air Max Pulse on March 26th 2023, Nike launched ‘The Pulse of London’ campaign. Running throughout the summer, it starred a talented group of the city’s up-and-coming creatives, from stylists and photographers to designers, content creators and rappers, each one epitomising the Pulse’s artistic energy and urban-inspired spirit. Meanwhile, in Paris, the brand set up an immersive audio-visual installation at its House of Innovation store on the Champs-Élysées. Over two weeks, visitors were invited to express their own perspective on the ‘feeling of Air’ which was then turned into unique sounds and AI-generated images.
