During the 1990s, Nike released many iconic basketball shoes. One of the most unique is the Air More Uptempo, which offered powerful players cushioning protection for heavy landings. Bold and unforgettable, it has returned as a retro sneaker multiple times over the years, most recently for its 30th anniversary in 2026.

The Nike Air More Uptempo features a sturdy upper made from durable materials such as leather, nubuck and synthetics. Its high-cut collar provides firm ankle support and a large forefoot panel protects the toes. Meanwhile, its innovative lacing system combines nylon lace loops with hard-wearing plastic hooks to ensure long-lasting lockdown. Elastic bungee cords spanning the instep hold the foot more securely in place, with pull tabs on the nicely padded tongue and heel for easy on and off and mesh over the midfoot for a touch of breathability.

The midsole of the Air More Uptempo has a dual-cushioning setup of firm, stable Phylon foam and three Air Max units that provide outstanding impact protection along the length of the foot. As well as being highly supportive, this combination is comfortable and responsive. Comprehensive traction comes from the full-length rubber outsole, which incorporates four large pods with a reliable herringbone tread alongside oval-shaped indentations at each end. Lastly, the rubber extends upwards at the toes to offer extra protection up front.

The Nike Air More Uptempo is well-known for its distinctive look. For inspiration, designer Wilson Smith drew on urban graffiti, pop art and maximalist architecture when creating the enormous Air lettering that dominates each flank. As the silhouette’s stunning centrepiece, this announces the distinctive cushioning technology which can be seen through visible windows along the sides and heel of the midsole. To this, Smith added various Swooshes, with logos etched into the outsole and midsole, embroidered onto the toe box and attached to the tongue and heel.

When the Air More Uptempo debuted in 1996, it quickly became associated with Nike athlete Scottie Pippen. It supported his defensive might and his ability to drive towards the basket in attack, helping him through a key part of the Chicago Bulls’ historic run to a second three-peat. He also wore a special USA edition at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where he took the legendary Dream Team to a famous gold medal. This heritage resonates with modern basketball players and fans as well as sneaker enthusiasts, as does the silhouette’s standout look.

In 2017, the Air More Uptempo was involved in a striking collaboration with Supreme and in 2023, AMBUSH designer Yoon Ahn modified the original into a classy, skate-inspired low-top. For the latest retro launch in 2026, the OG black and white edition returned alongside a host of other colourways in both high and low-top styles.
