Aqua Turf sneakers

In the 1980s, Nike released various shoes tailored towards aquatic activities. By the early 90s, these mostly came under the Nike Aqua Gear collection, but one particular silhouette was launched as part of the new, outdoor-friendly ACG (All Conditions Gear) line. Known as the Aqua Turf, this popular land-sea hybrid made a splash on its 1992 launch and again when it was revived from the archives in 2025.

The upper of the Nike Aqua Turf blends soft, flexible neoprene with a large, 4-way stretch mesh panel for snug comfort right out of the box. Rather than being waterproof, these materials are water-friendly, allowing the wearer to move easily through aquatic environments and drying quickly once back on land. A partial heel counter provides rearfoot support, with a pull tab that enhances the convenience of the slip-on design.

A lightweight EVA midsole supports the Aqua Turf, its contoured surface offering smooth comfort and a barefoot feel. The stiff strobel board, which the foot sits directly on top of, is designed to prevent twisting and thus provide stability across uneven terrain such as that found along rocky coastlines and muddy riverbanks. Lastly, the textured rubber outsole incorporates large, curvaceous grip pads for solid traction on a range of wet and dry surfaces.

With its sleek, low-profile build, the Nike Aqua Turf has a casual, minimalist style that delivers understated elegance. Nike Swoosh branding has been etched into the outsole, and logos accent each ankle, but otherwise the shoe is gracefully unadorned. Meanwhile, the outsole’s globular tread pattern subtly references its amphibious nature. On its return in 2025, Nike brought back some of the vibrant colourways from the original 1990s collection alongside other versions decorated in classy neutrals and even one with a captivating Realtree camo upper.
