In the early 2020s, it was common for sneaker brands to revive heritage models, so when Nike released a new silhouette in 2024, it stood out as something different. Known as the Nike C1TY, it is made with hard-wearing functional features that can survive the daily rigours of the city streets.

The C1TY’s upper incorporates a heavy duty yet breathable mesh with durable suede panelling reinforcing the flanks, heel and toe. A substantial textile pull tab loops out from the heel above a distinctive asymmetrical seam that cuts diagonally across the overlay for an intriguing look. Triangular stitching enhances this effect, while the microfibre collar adds a raw edge around the ankle. More mesh covers the tongue, which has a branded label decorated with further geometric patterns, and reflective accents highlight the toe as well as the oblong-shaped openings in the midfoot. Padding inside the heel and tongue provides all-round comfort, and leather Swooshes complete the upper with a classic touch.

Underfoot, the Nike C1TY has a powerful, boot-like sole unit, with a thick slab of supportive foam to cushion each step. The cupsole design incorporates high rubber sides that protect the feet from harm while still allowing enough flexibility to move with ease. On the outsole, two different lug formations can be found, both of which are based on the familiar Waffle tread pattern. This creates a dual-stiffness that offers versatility, while the deep grooves in between both the small and large grip pads ensure excellent traction throughout.

Visually, the C1TY appears to be influenced by retro Nike sneakers, but ultimately, it derives its own distinct aesthetic from the urban environment it is made for. When it was released in autumn 2024, many of the colourways were based on the tones of the city, with designs like ‘Skyline’, ‘Concrete’ and ‘Safety Cone’ all reflecting this fact. Each one exhibits bold colour-blocking and features subtle branding details like an embossed Swoosh on the back of the midsole and lettering on its medial side that references Nike’s headquarters followed by the words “TREAD WITH C-A-R-E” in a stippled font.

The combination of a tough exterior, comfortable interior and solid streetwear aesthetic make the Nike C1TY a suave lifestyle sneaker that can support you through the most challenging of urban landscapes.
