Downshifter running shoes

Originally released in the late 2000s, the Nike Downshifter is an entry-level neutral running shoe for beginners and casual joggers. Although its design has evolved, it remains consistent in its role, always being reliable and accessible while providing the fundamentals of running support.

The Downshifter is known for being lightweight, comfortable and stylish, with the versatility to tackle light road-running, gym work and everyday lifestyle use. The soft, low-profile Phylon foam midsoles of early 2010s versions like the 4, 5 and 6 are well-cushioned, and their grooved Waffle outsoles ensure good grip and flexibility. Mesh uppers provide breathability, and overlays add structure through the forefoot and heel, while traditional lacing brings a classic fit and plush padding softens the ankle.

In 2017, the Nike Downshifter 7 introduced a more streamlined upper with a no-sew midfoot overlay encircling the heel and connecting to the lacing for greater lockdown and a distinctive style. Updated versions also appear on Downshifters 8 and 9, the former integrating cuffed eyelets into its sleek, structured sidewalls, the latter securing the foot with sturdy textile bands on its uppermost eyelets.

Nike made significant upgrades to 2020’s Downshifter 10, improving support and security through its firm heel counter and longer tongue. Its striking TPU midfoot cage enhances stability and containment, while its stacked foam midsole is more comfortable, offers better impact protection and even delivers a little responsiveness. Lastly, the reworked Waffle outsole is more durable and produces dependable traction. Its successor, the Downshifter 11, features a refined midfoot support system, with flexible internal strands behind its translucent side panelling alongside a more secure gusseted tongue. 

From 2022’s Nike Downshifter 12, recycled materials have been used to improve sustainability. Small alterations across its upper include a convenient heel pull and reflective elements, while its mesh and no-sew overlays are more durable and protective. Updated internal bands provide snug lockdown, and ventilation has been enhanced using feedback from runners. Its taller midsole is softer, cushier and more balanced than before, blending comfort and stability, and its diamond-shaped lugs offer reliable grip.

In 2024, Nike released the Downshifter 13 with a soft, lightweight and highly breathable sandwich-mesh upper. Structured through the midfoot, its enhanced internal fit bands deliver supportive containment, and the pull tab has been removed in favour of cascading padding that offers a comfortable slip-in feel. The large, recycled foam midsole has raised, contoured sidewalls for stability and support alongside a slight improvement in responsiveness, all while being surprisingly lightweight. A rear bevel aids heel strikers, and its versatile counter balances softness and stiffness. The tongue is no longer gusseted, but its plush padding combines with that on the heel and the reinforced lacing to lock the foot in place. The high-abrasion outsole is also made from environmentally friendly materials, incorporating recycled Nike Grind for durable traction.
