Kobe 3 basketball shoes

Kobe Bryant’s first Nike signature shoe was launched in 2006, and the line quickly became incredibly popular. After becoming NBA scoring champion in back-to-back seasons, the legendary Lakers star was ready to impress again in the Kobe 3. Almost two decades later, Nike brought Eric Avar’s lauded silhouette back as a Protro edition with updated features made for the rigours of the modern game.

The Nike Kobe 3 delivers comfort and containment through a breathable mesh upper overlaid with a TPU netting that connects to the lacing for firm lockdown. This well-structured panelling is durable but flexible, allowing the foot to move with fluid ease. Equally supple synthetic leather overlays reinforce the forefoot and heel, the high-cut collar protects the ankle, and the tongue incorporates more padding and larger perforations for increased comfort. Meanwhile, an internal heel counter bolsters the rearfoot, with a diamond-shaped TPU piece adding further support below the lateral ankle.

The Kobe 3 Protro is founded upon a sturdy rubber cupsole with a full-length Zoom Air Strobel atop a lightweight slab of bouncy Cushlon 3.0 foam for maximum energy return, comfort and impact protection. Its low-drop, flat-to-the-ground design offers decent court feel and control, with a carbon-fibre midfoot shank maintaining torsional rigidity for stability during dynamic movements. The outsole has both herringbone and diamond grip patterns with recessed lugs and added micro-texturing – a powerful combination that provides enhanced multidirectional traction. Extra stitching has been added where the outsole rubber comes up over the toe to increase durability, while the long lateral outrigger creates a wide platform for stable landings.

Despite its technological updates, the Nike Kobe 3 Protro stays true to the stunning aesthetic of the 2008 original. Its distinctive sidewalls are inspired by a basketball net, with a single Swoosh cutting across the heel and Kobe’s ‘Sheath’ logo featuring throughout the design. The laces are secured by a cylindrical dubrae, and a triangular cutout in the outsole reveals the supportive carbon-fibre shank. Lastly, the diamond-shaped tread patterns are a charismatic homage to Kobe’s oldest daughter, Natalia, whose middle name is Diamanté.

Kobe Bryant first wore the Kobe 3 five days before the traditional Christmas Day release on 20th December, 2007. Rather than choosing a winter-themed shoe, he donned a dark, stealthy colourway which gave the silhouette a captivating mystery ahead of its 2008 release. Its clever fusion of performance and style made the ‘Orca’ launch edition hugely popular, with Kobe’s incredible MVP-winning season bringing continued success. Over a decade later, in 2025, the Kobe 3 Protro built on this, debuting in an elegant, all-white ‘Halo’ colourway on Kobe’s birthday: 23rd August. It also coincided with the Mamba League Invitational tournament – a yearly celebration of Kobe’s powerful legacy that aims to elevate elite youth players. The following summer, Nike released the Kobe 3 Low Protro, offering the same outstanding blend of style and support but with greater ankle mobility.

The Nike Kobe 3 is a visually stunning basketball shoe that honours Kobe’s famously unrelenting drive for sporting greatness by providing cutting-edge cushioning, traction and support alongside a bold retro style.
