The Nike Pegasus is one of the brand’s longest-serving and most popular lines of running shoes. For years, it has provided support to athletes around the world, and in 2023, it reached a significant landmark with the release of the Pegasus 40. 

With so many iterations behind it, the Nike Pegasus 40 has a strong design foundation to draw from. As a result, many of its features are similar to those of its predecessor, with just a few changes made to produce something even more comfortable and supportive. Its large midsole is made from bouncy React foam, and there are energy-returning Zoom Air units in the forefoot and heel, which help put a spring in the step of the runner. Beneath this is a hard-wearing rubber outsole with a reliable tread that delivers excellent traction on various different surfaces.

The biggest updates to the Pegasus 40 appear on its mesh upper. Durable and flexible, it embraces the foot more securely than before thanks to a new midfoot band that wraps across the top of the foot, where it forms the shoe’s eyestay, thus integrating into its lacing system. Along with the gusseted tongue, which has extra padding to reduce lace pressure, this produces great lockdown, while the single-layer construction of the upper makes it highly breathable as well.

A series of other details then elevate the comfort and functionality of the silhouette, starting with the additional padding around the heel and the 10mm drop, which helps to protect the Achilles from injury. Specially engineered parts of the upper adapt to the shape of the foot to bring extra comfort to sensitive areas around the toe, arch and heel. Lastly, a reflective strip on the heel makes the shoe more visible at night for a safer running experience.

Alongside its host of high-quality components, the Pegasus 40 has a sleek appearance and a stylish, minimalist aesthetic. A swoosh marks the medial flank, and a simple outline appears on the lateral one, with a tiny logo adorning the wedge-shaped heel of the midsole. Subtle text appears on the forefoot of the lateral midsole and the eyestay, before a rectangular tongue patch completes the look.

Since the Nike Pegasus 40 first came out in February 2023, the brand has released a large collection of colourways, providing styles to suit everyone. With its reliable, versatile build offering all types of athletes comfort, durability and support for everyday training over multiple distances, the Pegasus 40 is a great all-round running shoe.
