On Air Max Day 2017, Nike released an exciting new sneaker with an astounding innovation – a full-length Air Max sole unit that provided the wearer with the experience of walking on air. Since its initial release, this bouncy shoe has been upgraded several times, and in 2023, the brand launched its lightest version yet: the Nike VaporMax 2023.

Built upon the ultimate Air Max sole, with its translucent walls showing off the soft cushioning inside, the VaporMax 2023 is both comfortable and supportive. Its integrated outsole features curving tubes lined with grip pads that are thicker in the most high-impact areas for durable traction. Meanwhile, around its top edge, the one-piece sole is attached directly to the upper via a wavy band of TPU, thus ensuring a secure connection between the two components.

The upper of the Nike VaporMax 2023 is made from lightweight Flyknit, whose woven design fits snugly around the entire foot. As well as being flexible, this tough material is highly breathable, and strong Flywire cables have been threaded through its flanks to add even more structural stability. At the eyestay, these connect to the shoe’s lacing system, which along with the design of the collar, delivers great lockdown.

Plush, furry padding lines the inside of the collar to protect the ankle from rubbing, while a pull tab has been affixed to the heel for easy on and off. Synthetic overlays appear at each end of the shoe, and a series of swooshes have been placed across the design, from the lateral sole to the toe, with larger logos printed onto the sidewalls. Accompanying these subtle hits of branding are two sets of stylised VaporMax lettering, one over the tongue, the other running up the heel.

Internally, the speckled sockliner of the Air VaporMax 2023 displays a Move to Zero pinwheel logo that indicates its use of recycled materials. These form at least 20% of the upper, making it an environmentally friendly option. As well as being colourful, this comfort-giving insole has also been filled with perforations to reveal hints of the Air Max unit underneath. It is even possible to remove the whole thing to fully view the innovative sole from above.
