During the mid-1990s, Nike took inspiration from Kenya’s elite distance runners and their tendency to train without shoes, leading to a barefoot running silhouette named the Air Rift after the country’s breathtaking Great Rift Valley. In 2002, Nike launched its sleek follow-up, the Air Rift 2, which returned over twenty years later as a stylish retro lifestyle sneaker.

The Nike Air Rift 2 features a flexible upper with airy mesh underlays and smooth sidewall panelling filled with breathable ventilation holes. Its strapless, sleeve-like design makes it easy to slip the shoe on and off for casual use, while the rear circular opening grips the heel and prevents slippage. At the forefoot, the famous split-toe pioneered by its predecessor remains, encouraging natural alignment of the foot for increased stability and comfort.

A sculpted, dual-density foam midsole supports the Air Rift 2, with encapsulated Air cushioning offering excellent shock-absorption beneath the heel. Its structured build comfortably cradles the rearfoot, while the full-length outsole is lined with deep grooves that deliver flexible traction from heel to toe. Made of durable rubber, it extends over the toes to provide extra protection up front.

The low-profile construction of the Nike Air Rift 2 offers a fine balance of balletic elegance and retro sporting style. Its minimalist branding includes an embroidered Swoosh on the lateral forefoot and Rift lettering across the instep mirrored by a contrast band running down the centre of the insole. Gracefully flowing design lines are formed by the sidewall perforations, and the iconic split toe is both a standout visual accent and a bold celebration of the Rift’s barefoot engineering.

Nike relaunched the Air Rift 2 in 2026 with the ‘Kenya’ colourway, whose deep black and green outer features bright flashes of red in homage to the country’s flag. The silhouette appeared in the brand’s ‘SNKRS Style’ series, with London-based creative Coco Mell praising its “comfort, experimentation and signature style” before showcasing the casual sneaker’s versatility by pairing it with various different outfits. Just a few months later, the Rift 2 appeared in a stunning collaboration with New York’s Museum of Modern Art, resulting in two colourways with bold tonal contrasts and unique touches such as classy MoMA lettering, co-branded insoles and translucent outsoles.

The Nike Air Rift 2 is a chic evolution of the original split-toe silhouette that offers easy everyday comfort alongside an expressive throwback style.
